At the tail end of 2025, I had a phone chat with a family friend, Kathy. She'd just transitioned out of her main career and was ready for a new adventure—opening a specialty storefront stocking snacks from across the country. Kathy, like me, has moved all around the states and understands the importance of food in establishing a sense of place. Most importantly, she understandably found it a pain to have her favorite popcorn shipped all the way from Washington state to coastal North Carolina. Why couldn't it be stocked at the store on the corner? And why couldn't she be the lady to open that shop!?
